Royal Taste, Outlet Receipts

English country style without the estate. The brands the royals actually buy from, the icons who wore them best, and where to get the same look for a lot less.

The Look in One Line

A wax jacket over a good knit, dark denim or cords, and clean smart sneakers. That's it. No suits, no dress shoes, nothing that shouts a logo. It works at the office, on a Saturday and at dinner, and it gets better the more worn in it looks.

House Rules

  1. Earth tones do the heavy lifting. Olive, navy, brown, charcoal, cream. Keep it to one pattern per outfit, like a Fair Isle, a check shirt or a tartan scarf.
  2. Texture beats logos. Wax, tweed, cord, suede, cable knit. If someone can read the brand from across the room, it's probably not this look.
  3. Smart sneakers count as dressed up. Low profile, leather or suede, and actually clean.
  4. Spend on the outside, save on the inside. Put the money into the jacket, the coat and the knits. Tees, chinos and socks can be cheap.
  5. Fit beats price. A $60 knit that fits beats a $600 one that doesn't. Check the shoulders first, then sleeve length.
  6. Buy in order. Each piece should work with the ones you already have. The lays out the order.
